Pattern - Plains Indian Cloth Dress

 Plains Indian Cloth Dress Pattern will let you produce a simple "everyday" camp dress or a more elaborate powwow dress. Includes Kiowa, Comanche, Kiowa-Apache, Sioux, Cheyenne, Crow and Blackfoot tribal styles.

 Materials varied from a light cotton calico, popular for everyday wear, to the fancier and more expensive velvet, wool stroud cloth, or the ultimate: rainbow selvedge broadcloth. Many times the upper portion of dresses made with these heavy materials were cotton lined, especially when the yoke was decorated with elk teeth, dentalium or cowrie shells. This made the dress more attractive as well as providing extra support for the decorations.

 Cloth dresses came to the Plains Indian women with the westward movement of the fur trade. Light calicos were very popular for everyday use, red and blue trade cloth (broadcloth) was used for "best dress, "or special occasions...
